We've been trying out many cafes especially those that are "popular" recently. So nowadays, we often meet up to go cafe hunting!
1. Open Door Policy
Price is on a slightly higher side and we both felt that it wasn't worth the amount we paid. I ordered their burger while he had their duck ragu pasta.
I think this cost about $25/28 there's practically no visible meat at all and it was really salty. I understand that duck ragu is "supposed" to be like this but i would prefer the meat to be not so minced so we can at least taste it.
The first thing i said to Bryan when i saw it was, "Wah the bread looks fucked." I like soft and fluffy bread but having said that i think this was still alright. The patty was medium rare as requested and it's how i like it. The only downside for me was the bread.
Bryan, on the other hand, felt that it was too blend.
2. Forty Hands
It's just opposite ODP so we headed there for coffee and desserts. I like coffee so it's the place for me! I ordered their cappuccino and we shared a lemon cake and a carrot cake.
As much as i like coffee, i can't tell what's a good coffee (what an irony) but for me, this was slightly lighter in terms of taste. Would have preferred it to be slightly thicker but it works for me too.
Both Bryan and i LOVE lemon flavoured desserts. I think this lemon cake only cost $4/4.50 and it's really worth the price! I must have really like it a lot cos i think i finished more than half of this.
Not a huge fan of carrot cake cos it doesn't taste like a cake to me so i'm not going to review on this but if you must know, Bryan prefers this than the lemon cake.
3. Wimbly Lu
I'm sure all of you have heard of this place. It's located at Jalan Riang and i really like how it's not super crowded like some cafes or restaurants in town. Probably also because we went there at 7pm because when we left at about 9pm, there was a long queue.
Love this chocolate lava cake! Divine~
According to Bryan, he thinks that it's one of the best chocolate lava cake he tried. & if i'm not wrong it's only $5 for this goodness.
Their signature root beer float which was MEH.
Bryan loves root beer and when the waitress recommended their root beer cake to us, i knew he was going to take it even though i was quite skeptical about it. I mean i like root beer, but root beer cake....maybe not that much. & well, it didn't turn out like what he had expected.
Bread and butter pudding cake which was alright. The cake was a bit too hard for my liking but i guess this works for me too.
We also ordered a tiramisu which is not shown here cos i didn't think it was photogenic. Tiramisu can never go wrong right? Especially for a tiramisu lover like me, i really like it. I wished it was slightly bigger though.
Overall, the desserts at Wimbly Lu are quite affordable and for the price you're paying, i think it's good stuff. Except for their mains though. We tried their baked rice/pasta for $10 and the portion is so small and it doesn't taste like normal baked rice/pasta at all.
My happy pill :)
4. Amici Authentic Italian Restaurant
This one is not a cafe but we went there recently cos i was craving for pasta! So Bryan recommended this place as he came here before with his family.
We went their for lunch and ordered their lunch set for only $14.90+. It includes salad OR soup, pasta, dessert and coffee OR tea. Pretty worth it if i can say.
My caesar salad
My pesto penne pasta which was so so. I like the pieces of salmon as it was soft and it goes well with the creamy pesto sauce. I'm not sure why i didn't like it that much or what went wrong but it was just alright for me.
Bryan's mushroom soup which was ok. I prefer the mushroom soup at soup spoon because you can eat the small mushroom bits and it is much thicker there. Amici's mushroom soup was a little watery for me but it was alright.
& his tomato based pasta which i didn't quite like.
Our desserts. I had tiramisu and he had chocolate brownie but we shared them anyway. His brownie was a disappointment. It was too hard and too dry. As for the tiramisu, it was not bad but i thought a little more alcohol content would be better.
5. Daily Scoop
I'm sure daily scoop requires no introduction as it was nothing new to you guys so i'm gonna skip the review too cos we've been here a few times.
I always order their strawberry shortcake ice cream. Frankly speaking i prefer B&J's strawberry cheesecake but i'm not complaining because this is good too.
6. Plain Vanilla
My first time trying plain vanilla cupcakes because i seldom buy cupcakes too. Decided to give it a try since we were at Holland Village area (for Amici and daily scoop). 1 for $3.50 and 6 for $19 so i bought 6.
Red velvet, strawberry white chocolate, oreo, chocolate and banana, caramel(??) and lastly their daily special for that day was mint. We tried the mint and the chocolate banana together and i know this is not going to be a fair judgement because i don't like mint flavoured food except for sweets. So yes, i didn't fancy their mint cupcake and i thought the chocolate banana was average because the banana taste was very faint. It just felt like a chocolate cupcake.
Then over the next few days i tried the red velvet, strawberry white chocolate and oreo. I LOVE THEIR OREO CUPCAKE?!?! Omg it's really good and nothing compared to the first 2 i tried. I also like their strawberry white chocolate even though i wished the strawberry on top was fresh but i don't blame them cos i kept it for a few days before eating it. In the middle of the cupcake lies some strawberries inside, what a pleasant surprise cos i expected it to be like the rest. As for the red velvet, i honestly prefer twelve cupcakes. I love red velvet cupcake and so far my favourite still goes to Twelve cupcakes.
But i would definitely go back for their oreo and strawberry white chocolate! I can't give my review on the caramel (?? Not sure is it caramel lol) cupcake yet because i've yet to try it.
7. Jewel Cafe + Bar
Another coffee place to be! Again, i ordered their cappuccino. It was aromatic and this beats forty hands' cappuccino imo. Even Bryan who is not a coffee drinker says that he likes it.
We both ordered burgers but i didn't take photo of mine cos it wasn't photogenic. I ordered their Port and Cheese burger but they gave me the wrong order - Praise the lard. I just took it anyway cos i didn't want to be difficult. Well, i didn't like it. The patty was overcooked hence it was too hard. I'm quite particular about beef because i like it medium rare whereby it's still slightly soft and juicy. This is clearly not what i was looking for.
This is Bryan's OMG burger which was huge but again, i find the patty too hard just like mine and even though it looks good in photos, i think the taste of the individual ingredient doesn't complement each other. As for Bryan, he thinks that it's not bad.
Ok finally i'm done with this. I didn't intend for this to turn out like a food review just that we've been to so many cafes lately, i don't have photos of us to blog about hahaha. Our instagrams are also filled with photos of food :/ Ok anyw i'm gonna label this post under "food hunt". Like the one we went to TPY to hunt for good food except this is cafe hunting.
